The YAL watch as you can probably guess from its design has been inspired by Tron, and uses a number of blue LEDs to tell the time. New artificial retina helps blind mice see

A cure for blindness could be brewing at a Cornell University laboratory. Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York say they've successfully decoded the brain signals that allow mice to see. Using this information with a new type of prosthetic retina, they were able to restore vision in mice. Next up, the researchers say they've cracked the code of a monkey retina, which is nearly identical to that of a human. If the prosthesis works on monkeys too, the researchers think they may eventually be able to help people who've lost their eyesight. "It's an exciting time," Sheila Nirenberg, a computational neuroscientist in the department of physiology and biophysics at Weill Cornell, said in a statement. "We can make blind mouse retinas see, and we're moving as fast as we can to do the same in humans." Say you need to charge your cellphone, but you are in the middle of nowhere. Well, if you had a wearable battery that recharges from your movement, it would be no problem at all. That day is coming. Researchers at Georgia Tech have come up with a way to recharge a lithium-ion coin-sized battery inside the sole of a shoe. The usual dividers between electrodes have been replaced with a polyvinylidene difluoride film that uses piezoelectrics to recharge the battery by adding pressure to that small gap. You don’t need any outside voltage, which means that your own movement creates the pressure required to recharge the cell. It will be pretty cool to be charging our batteries like this one day soon. They just have to perfect this technology first.

Hidden between individual television channels is a small but valuable collection of airwaves that will allow for a kind of “super Wi-Fi” network. The Federal Communications Commission recently opened up the spectrum that sits between television channels numbered 1 through 51. Wireless communications in those “white spaces” have been permitted since Jan. 26 in Wilmington, N.C., the FCC’s designated testbed location. After the bugs are worked out, the spaces will be opened up nationally in the coming months. The FCC designated the white spaces as “unlicensed” band, meaning anyone can broadcast in it for free. It‘s a primo band that sits lower than today’s Wi-Fi, allowing signals to travel over significantly longer distances and through buildings and walls. Johathan Ritchey has invented the Watermill, which is an atmospheric water generator. It converts air into fresh water. This latest technology invention produces fresh water at a cost of about 3 cents a liter (1 quart). Originally designed for areas that do not have clean drinking water, the Watermill is for households that prefer an eco-friendly, cost effective alternative to bottled water. Atmospheric water generators convert air into water when the temperature of the air becomes saturated with enough water vapor that it begins to condense (dew point). "What is unique about the Watermill is that it has intelligence," says Ritche. This makes the appliance more efficient. It samples the air every 3 minutes to determine the most efficient time to convert the air into water. It will also tell you when to change the carbon filter and will shut itself off if it cannot make pure clean water.

A new prototype house walked around the campus of the Wysing Arts Centre in Cambridgeshire, England. The eco-friendly house is powered by solar cells and minature windmills, and comes with a kitchen, a composting toilet, a system for collecting rain water, one bed, a wood stove for CO2 neutral heating, a rear opening that forms a stairway entrance, and six legs. A collaborative effort between MIT and the Danish design collective N55, the house walks about five kilometers an hour similar to the walking speed of a human. The legs reguire a software algorithm to calculate the movement and position of the legs to provide stability over varying terrain. The house can turn, move forward or backwards, or change height as required and can be programmed with GPS waypoints for travelling to destinations.

Google is looking to break into this brand of technology and has filed a patent application. The Google technology will use a series of video frames to generate clusters of facial representations which are associated with any person. By understanding what someone looks like from any given angle, Google could then associate a name to whenever that person is recognised in a video clip. The technology is sophisticated enough to handle differences in lighting, shadows and faces at any conceivable angle. Scientist has got success in linking the quantum properties of two separated ions using microwaves to manipulate them. This is currently done with the help of laser beams and now this advancement can shrink the size of quantum computers. Now we can augment their talents – using wearable electronic fingertips that provide tingling feedback about whatever we touch. John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and colleagues have designed a flexible circuit that can be worn over the fingertips. It contains layers of gold electrodes just a few hundred nanometres thick, sandwiched between layers of polyimide plastic to form a "nanomembrane". This is mounted on a finger-shaped tube of silicone rubber, allowing one side of the circuit to be in direct contact with the fingertips. On the other side, sensors can be added to measure pressure, temperature or electrical properties such as resistance.
